Day 58: The Walk to School

As a favour to the Volunteers, Nina acted as a guide on a hike after work today, taking them (and me) along a 6km trail to the nearest Quilombo -- settlements, no more than one or two buildings, usually made of mud, situated deep in the forest and inhabited by the descendants of escaped slaves.

The Quilombola in modern times are generally impoverished, so can't leave the forest even if they want to. But education is mandatory in Brazil, so children from the Quilombos walk that 6km+ trail every day, morning and evening, to get to the bus stop to catch a school-bus that will take them the next 6km into town.

And I nearly passed out from doing it just once...
